Although far less common than the oil pump issues with engines leading unto the S54 (where the oil pump sprocket nut backs itself off) you can never be too careful, and so while we had some free bench space and time, we set about rebuilding #001’s pump.

The kit for the job is VAC Motorsport’s excellent S54 Oil Pump Upgrade Kit, as stocked by Hack Engineering. It consists of a newly manufactured oil pump shaft and sprocket. Instead of a shallow splined section on the shaft for the sprocket to mount to with a small nut on the end, the VAC shaft uses a CNC-cut mounting flange and a high-grade left-hand threaded bolt.
