At Hack Engineering Machine Shop, BMW cylinder heads are our speciality.

Although a great engine design that has been proved over many years, the M50/M52 does suffer from one weak point. Its valve guides; excessive valve guide wear can have many symptoms including:

  • Excessive oil consumption
  • Excessive exhaust smoke
  • Fouled spark plugs causing misfiring and general poor running
  • Valve failure resulting in complete engine failure

Where this used to be a case of cylinder head replacement, with the use of modern equipment and techniques we can now bring a new lease of life to your cylinder head.

Using the industry-leading machine from Carmec (the VGP1200), Hack Engineering Machine Shop can concentrically remove the valve guides, reducing the chance of damage to the head from removal.

When fitting new valve guides it is imperative that the correct interference fit is achieved – valve guide manufacturers produce guides in varying different outer diameters exactly for this reason. Once the valve guides have been fitted into the head the internal diameter is then diamond honed to the original specification, the valve seats are then recut using our three-angle valve seat cutter. This ensures that concentricity between the valve guide and the valve seat is within 0.01mm.

Valve guides are priced additionally, this service is for both the intake and exhaust valve guides, full measurements are taken before the cylinder head is worked on, in most cases where the head is heated to aid removal and refit, the cylinder head will require refacing, this is priced separately.

Cylinder heads can be shipped worldwide, or dropped-off/collected to/from our machine shop in East Sussex. Please note that pricing is estimated based on condition, jobs will be estimated individually on receipt of the cylinder head.

Other services offered include:

  • Boring/honing
  • Crank polishing
  • Full supply of parts
  • Unleaded conversions
  • Cylinder head/block re-facing
