Koflach Engine Developments is a new sister company of Hack Engineering’s, which will focus on the development of some very exciting new components for the S54 (to begin with at least). First on the list is cams, but not before we’ve built up a nice engine to put them in.

Where Build #001 is to be an engine with compromise built in for good road manners (to be run in a nice E46 M3 road car), Build #002 is for the S54 E36 Touring, a stripped out track machine where the emphasis will be on all-out performance. A large part of this is the camshaft design – for #001 retaining the VANOS will be essential for road driveability and low end torque. For #002 that doesn’t matter so much and so the envelope can be pushed.

Sure enough as was suspected, the engine has suffered piston failure (as had #001). Two chunks of ring land broken off. Time to get to work…
